Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

This text belongs to the cult inventories pertaining to the holy town of Nerik (Cammarosano 2018: 332 with literature, add this text to the list; for the classification of this tablet see id. 2013: 80). The gods treated on the tablet belong to the circle of the Storm god of Nerik. King Tudḫaliya (IV) is mentioned in line ii 7′ in connection to the institution of a festival (probably the spring festival). The festival descriptions are more detailed than usual and can be therefore used for better understanding the abbreviated expressions of other tablets.

The tablet presents similarities with another large cult inventory of Nerik, namely KUB 42.100+, with similar kind of offerings and analogous contributions made by the “priest.” The two tablets have in common certain script features as well, including verticals slightly leaning towards the left, sign variants and spellings (e.g. SANGA, HZL no. 231/12; frequent use of “redundant” verticals; ḫazziwi- with Ú); finally, both tablets do not use null objects (for his tablet see ii 9, for KUB 42.100+ see e.g. KUB 27.68+ i 8, 10). The occurrence of the late variant of QA in KUB 25.24 calls for caution in attributing both tablets to the same scribe, since KUB 42.100+ always has the pre-LNS variant (Cammarosano 2018: 338-39), but note that KUB 42.100+ uses e.g. both variants of NI, with and without inscribed verticals.

Palaeography and orthography: Cursive but regular script, very similar to that of KBo 26.160 (q.v.); the verticals lean slightly towards the left. Late QA (ii 14); “redundant” verticals (e.g. in Ú, É, KÁN). Note the spelling DUGḫupparaš.
